Kaizer Chiefs Lose Key Players Ahead of Golden Arrows Showdown

Kaizer Chiefs has been dealt a major blow following the injury of key players ahead of their crucial clash against Lamontville Golden Arrows on Sunday at Mbombela Stadium.

Amakhosi announced on Wednesday evening that their first-choice goalkeeper, Brandon Petersen, suffered a knee injury during Tuesday morning training and is expected to be out for four to six weeks.

“Goalkeeper Brandon Petersen sustained a knee injury during training on Tuesday morning and will be sidelined for an estimated four to six weeks. The experienced shot-stopper, who has featured in every match since the season kicked off in August, injured the medial collateral ligament in his left knee and will now undergo rehabilitation,” the club’s website stated.

Petersen had been a subject of criticism since the start of the season, having made several errors that led to goals. One of his blunders led to Chiefs being knocked out in the opening rounds of MTN8. The Fernando da Cruz-led team is currently fourth in the Betway Premiership standings, having conceded seven goals and scored 12.

Worsening the situation is the injury to Wandile Duba, who suffered a hip and groin injury that will keep him out of action for approximately two weeks. Duba had been a focal point of the Glamour Boys’ attacks after the injury to Flavio da Silva. He has already netted three goals this season.

“Both players have played key roles in Kaizer Chiefs’ strong start to the campaign, and their absence will be felt. The Club extends its best wishes to Petersen and Duba for a speedy recovery and looks forward to welcoming them back to action soon,” the club concluded.

Renaldo Leaner or Bruce Bvuma could be drafted in to replace Brandon Petersen. Up front, Etiosa Ighodaro and Luke Baartman provide additional attacking options. Ighodaro started in the team's previous match against Polokwane City, which ended in a 1-1 draw.

The clash against Golden Arrows is a must-win for Kaizer Chiefs, who are eager to close the gap on their rivals, Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns. The upcoming international break could prove beneficial for Amakhosi, giving the coaching staff valuable time to reintegrate several players returning from injury.
