Orlando Pirates have received a significant boost ahead of their highly anticipated MTN8 final clash against Mamelodi Sundowns on 10 October, with several key players making encouraging progress in their recovery from injury.
The Buccaneers confirmed that striker Evidence Makgopa and midfielder Thalente Mbatha have both returned to full-team training after successfully overcoming their respective injury setbacks.
Makgopa, who suffered patellar tendinitis before the start of the season, is yet to make an appearance for Pirates in the current campaign. His return comes as welcome news for coach Abdeslam Ouaddou, who could soon have an additional attacking option available for the business end of the season.
Mbatha's recovery is equally important for the Soweto giants. The energetic midfielder has returned after a knee injury and is expected to add quality, balance and experience to the Pirates midfield as they prepare for the tough challenge posed by Sundowns in the cup final.
The positive updates do not end there. Pirates also confirmed that winger Mohau Nkota and forward Andre de Jong have taken the next step in their recovery by beginning field-based rehabilitation programmes. The duo is expected to return to full-team training in the near future, further strengthening the squad depth as the season progresses.
Nkota, who recently returned to the club on a season-long loan from Saudi Arabian side Al Ettifaq, is looking to regain full fitness and make an impact in Pirates colours once again. De Jong's steady recovery is also a welcome development as the club continues to manage its injury list.
Meanwhile, midfielder Sihle Nduli continues to make encouraging strides following the long-term injury he sustained against AmaZulu earlier in the campaign. The 30-year-old has resumed running on the field, marking another important milestone in his rehabilitation process.
Providing an update on Nduli's condition, Senior Physiotherapist Kutlwano Molefe said:
"Sihle has started running on the field and is scheduled to undergo field-based rehabilitation for approximately two weeks before beginning his reintegration into full-team training."
The latest injury update will undoubtedly lift spirits within the Pirates camp as they prepare for one of the biggest matches of their season. With key players returning and others edging closer to full fitness, the Buccaneers appear to be heading into the MTN8 final in a much stronger position.
As anticipation builds for the showdown against Mamelodi Sundowns, Pirates supporters will be encouraged by the growing availability of important squad members, giving the team an added boost in their pursuit of a fifth MTN8 title in succession.
